Setting Headings

Open a new document screen.  Look under Format for “Styles and Formatting” If you have XP, this may appear on the top left next to “File” on the toolbar.

Click on Styles and Formatting.  You should, again depending on the version you are using, see a toolbar pop up on the right.  If you do not see a toolbar, you will see something similar with Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.

Select Heading 1.  You are looking for MODIFY since you want to modify heading 1 to the following conditions.  If you are using a fairly current version of Word and if you click or scroll over HEADING 1, you will see a down arrow to the right; modify is an option.
Once you find MODIFY, click on it to reveal the next dialog box.
Click on Format to reveal the next dialog box.  Choose Font. Check the All Caps. Verify you are still Arial, bold, 14.  If anything has changed accidentally, fix it at this step. Click OK.

Choose Format once again.  Choose Paragraph to reveal a new dialog  box.
Change the spacing to 0 before and 0 after.  Click OK.

Once you are back to the document screen, you should see Heading 1 as Arial, bold, all caps, with no spacing before or after.  To try this, type while in the heading command.  Verify from the toolbar at the top Arial and 14 and left aligned.  You will, of course, see the ALL CAPS.  I modified heading 1 on this document, and I can easily verify its formatting from the tool bar when I click beside Heading 1 below.  In fact, if this is new to you, watch the toolbar change from NORMAL (Times New Roman) when you move your cursor from this paragraph to HEADING 1 (Arial).

Your Heading 1 should look like this: HEADING 1

Now, follow the same steps for HEADING 2.  Modify it to meet these conditions:

  • Leave Arial alone.
  • Change the point size from 14 to 12.
  • Remove bold.
  • Remove italics.
  • Leave all caps alone.
  • Change the spacing to 0 before and 0 after.

And, you should now have heading 2.  Once again, I modified this document to show you how heading 2 should look:

HEADING 2

Note:  All default settings are based on Normal.  Any variation from Normal involves a change in format.  Headings are always sans serif fonts, such as Arial.  Text is always Times New Roman.  When you are deciding between serif and sans serif, you are looking for the tiny little tick marks on the tips of the letters.  Your headings don’t have any, while your text does.
