Setting a Running Header

With the analytical report, you will for the first time, have two pages.  So you will need to set a running header.  This is a brief summary of how to set the running header.  You can find additional information on what should be in a typical business document's header in the memo course notes under FAQs.

Once you have created most parts to the analytical report, follow these instructions.

You MUST be on page 2 in your document to make this work.

  • Open View from the menu.

  • Select header footer.  A dotted box should appear at the top in the document you are creating along with the Header Footer Toolbar shown below.

    Header and Footer Toolbar
  • Select the 7th button from the left.  I am counting Insert Auto Text as button 1.

Page setup icon looks like an open book.

In the Page Setup box (revealed when you select the 7th button), check the "Different First Page" box.  Close the dialogue box, and you?re ready to set the header.

  • With your cursor in the dotted box, tab twice or choose right align.

  • Type in the first line - typically the recipient's name (the person to whom the document is addressed or whose name is in the TO line) - in this case, Jacqueline Durham.

  • Enter.  You may need to tab twice again.

  • Type in the second line - this will be the date for the document.

  • Enter, and possibly tab twice.

  • From the Header / Footer toolbar, choose the # button to insert the page number.  Or in this case, you can simply type in 2 since you have only two pages.

Insert Page Number icon - looks like a page with a # symbol on it.
  • Close the header/footer toolbar.  With luck, you should see the header on the SECOND page but not the FIRST.  If you see the header on the first also, reset the header.  This time make sure you are on the second page when you begin, and be sure you check the "Different First Page" box.

  • If all goes as expected you should have a header similar to the one shown on this file.
