Why do I need an advisor?

Your advisor will review your course plan with you. The advisor will make recommendations to make sure you are:

  • Taking the courses to fulfill your requirements toward earning a degree
  • Have the appropriate pre-requisites or co-requisites
  • Taking a manageable course load to be successful
  • Cleared for registration.
  • The computer system will not allow you to register until your advisor has entered your RAN.
  What are my responsibilities?

1. Find out who your advisor is
2. Prepare to meet your advisor
3. Be aware of registration deadlines
4. Meet with your advisor each semester
5. Register for classes

  Who is my advisor?

You should have received a letter by mail indicating your advisor. If you did not receive a letter, contact the I & ET division secretary:

Tonia McClain
(864) 646-1422
Cleveland Hall Room 131
tmcclain@tctc.edu

  Prepare to meet your advisor:

Familiarize yourself with the courses required by your major by reading the
course catalog located online or by hardcopy.

Pickup a curriculum sequence from the I & ET division office.
This will tell you which classes you should take during each semester.

Determine the number of classes you want to take.  Consider your work schedule, family obligations, financial aid requirements, insurance requirements, etc.  LIFE Scholarship does not pay for summer tuition.  Some classes are only offered in the summer.

Decide when you are available to take classes (days and times). Review schedule of classes and prepare a tentative schedule.

Apply for TAP and/or STEP credit if applicable.

  Meeting your Advisor:

Walk-ins will be accepted on Early Registration Day (April 18). Click here for schedule (if available) or look outside division office.

If seeking advisement after Early Registration Day, the best way to meet your advisor would be to make an appointment by calling or e-mailing.

Faculty members are only required to be in their office during office hours.

Faculty members' schedules are posted outside their office door. You may also access faculty schedules by contacting the division office.

The last date to be advised is Late Registration Day (Summer - May 14, Fall - Aug 14). Walk-ins will be accepted on this date as well. Contact division office for schedule.
