Ruby S. Hicks Writing Contest
Mrs. Ruby S. Hicks was an educator, a musician, a farmer, a benefactor, and a friend to the English department at Tri-County Technical College. For example, when state law prevented the College from providing monetary awards to the winners of the department’s writing contest, Mrs. Hicks graciously donated the funds and encouraged us to continue recognizing the creative talents of area high school students with an annual contest. She also challenged us to maintain quality in all our professional endeavors. Therefore, for her patronage, her encouragement, and her friendship, the English Department renamed its annual writing competition the Tri-County Technical College’s Ruby S. Hicks Memorial Writing Contest in 2000.
Mrs. Hick’s generosity did not end with the English Department; she bequeathed to Tri-County a gift valued at more than three-quarters of a million dollars, the largest gift by an individual to the college’s foundation. Her bequest established the Ernest H. and Ruby Sharp Hicks Scholarship endowment, a fund that honors her and her late husband. The college also honored her memory with the naming of the Ruby S. Hicks Library/Administration Building.
The Ruby S. Hicks Memorial Writing contest is held annually, promoting creative writing in the areas of prose and poetry throughout area high schools.
