Catalog  Description:     

This course covers operating systems concepts of microcomputers, including file maintenance, disk organization, batch files, and subdirectory concepts.

 

 

Entry Level Skills:

Student should have a desire to learn how to use microcomputer operating system commands to accomplish system management tasks.

CPT 167

Course Competencies and

Objectives:

 

Upon completion of CPT 176, the student should be able to:

  1. Contrast and compare the five popular Microsoft Operating Systems: DOS, 9X, NT, 2000, and XP.
  2. Customize, navigate and utilize the Windows XP operating system to perform routine tasks using both the command and GUI interface levels.
  3. Identify various Windows XP O/S functions and their purpose.
  4. Categorize and describe internal and external Command line scripting commands.
  5. Apply appropriate system management techniques to optimize performance.
  1. Compare and contrast the operating systems studied as to:
    1. file characteristics and specifications
    2. directory structure
    3. storage structures and layouts
    4. command notation
    5. command capability and versatility
    6. security schemes
    7. backups
    8. user management
    9. memory management
    10. troubleshooting
  2. Identify network models and configurations including peer to peer and client/server with its resource sharing capabilities
  3. Research current OS features and updates using both on-line and hardcopy published documents both independently and in teams
  4. Pass a sample A+ Certification Exam

Grade Calculation Method:

The student will earn points throughout the term by completing assignments, activities, quizzes, and tests. There will be at least three exams, homework/classwork assignments or activities, and at least two labs.

At the end of the term, the final grade is calculated as follows:

Additional Information Pertaining to Grades:
